HONG KONG (WHAT TO EAT) - LORD'S STOW PORTUGESE EGG TARTS

LORD'S STOW PORTUGESE EGG TARTS

Famed Portuguese Egg Tarts, or Pasteis de Nata

Egg tarts are another must-try item when I visit Hong Kong. I especially preferred Portuguese egg tarts over the regular as it's a tart sweeter and of the crispy pastry. Although I didn't get to sample the originals from Macau's bakery, I had a few occasions to try these babies in Hong Kong.

Lord Stow's famed Portuguese egg tarts developed by Englishman Andrew Stow. In 1984, Andrew formed his own health food company, but it was 20 years ahead of its time. To support his fledgling company he took a second job at Macau's Hyatt. Being the only English guy there, the local Portuguese dubbed him 'Lord Stow', as he was lording it over them. Hence the nickname.

I heard that Lord's Stow Bakery Portuguese Egg Tarts from Hong Kong were equally good. You can find these at EXpresso @ The Excelsior Hotel. The following were pictures taken from my previous visit.

Tip: Please go early to avoid disappointment, I had to place my order of egg tarts for pick up the next day as it was sold out when I went late afternoon.

Pre-Order to avoid disappointment

The caramelized top just looked so inviting. Please eat it while it's hot, you will get a buttery puff pastry that is light and flaky, you will also get a rich butter taste and superior mouthfeel of the tart when when it's cold, just without the crunch like when it's fresh out from the oven.
